In the crowded world of mysteries and thrillers it takes something special to stand out, and unfortunately from this excerpt I don't think The Company of Demons has that spark. Maybe it's the detached, passive tone of the narrator, who seems relatively unconcerned and disaffected by the brutal murder of an acquaintance, but I didn't feel as instantly sucked into this story as the topic suggests I would.
