I'm not sure, even after the short excerpt, how to classify this book. It wants to be a murder thriller, but it started much too slow and in the wrong place to be a thriller. It feels kind of like a cozy, where relationships are more important than the crime, or a noir where the past overshadows the present, or one of those family dramas with crime on the side. So I would have to finish the book to classify it properly.
