I finished this one yesterday and it tore my heart out. It’s a story about Italian children from Naples who were sent up north for a better life after WWII. As Amerigo grows up with his adoptive family he has to decide whether to return home for good or leave his mother and go where the grass is greener. This story was heartbreakingly beautiful and was written so very well. The idea of what life is like and what life could be is so well portrayed in this book. I really got a feel for what it was like in Italy after the war and it made me really interested to do more of my own research and find out more about these children trains and how politics was involved with this initiative. I also loved how traditional the book was with the Italian names and dialogues. The author is from Naples and I can’t wait to read more of Viola Ardone’s work! Thank you @harperviabooks and @bookishfirst for my ARC!
