This was a beautiful story about love and family and the choices we make for our loved ones. I was drawn into the story immediately and could not stop reading. A historical fiction tale told from the viewpoint of a young Italian boy who is sent "up north" on a train with many other children to help them escape some of the poverty they currently experience. The journey that all the children took must have been a trying and emotional experience and I can see how hard things would be to be stuck between two worlds. I was captivated by the relationship between Amerigo and his mother and the difficult decisions they both had to make. At times I was angry and other times I sobbed. This is a story that I was not familiar with at all and I will most certainly be reading more about this time period. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys heart-wrenching historical fiction.
