I found the excerpt a fascinating read. The first-person did a very good job of developing the character of Amerigo. His game of points from the wear of shoes he sees is a quick glimpse into his situation and of his positive spirit. Sometimes we understand more than he does from what he says. Other times, he clearly has good insight into what is taking place.
His detailed narrative carries us into the story and the foreshadowing of events make us want to read on to see what happens next.
