Tear-jerking historical fiction

I am typically not a fan of historical fiction, but this story looks pretty interesting. The cover art doesn't make me want to read the book because I typically steer clear of historical fiction, but I think the target audience of historical fiction readers would enjoy the cover. I like that the perspective of the book is from Amerigo's point of view. Something about the story being told by a child makes it more straightforward and heartbreaking at the same time. I would be interested in branching out of my reading comfort zone to give this one a read. After reading the First Impression, this is definitely an example for me of "don't judge a book by its cover".
