When I saw the cover of The Children's Train, I automatically knew it would be related to WWII as this has become the stereotypical cover for that historical fiction subset.

The first look chapters are promising, but I am not sure if they are promising a great story of hope and overcoming obstacles, or a bleak and heartbreaking tale.

Amerigo appears to be an unreliable narrator with his telling of his head being shaved because of lice, then later saying it was shaved because he was rubbing a bald spot carrying the basket on his head, which I suppose being a child it makes sense that he cannot necessarily be trusted to see things how they are.
