I loved every minute spent reading the first 12 chapters of "The Children's Train," and I anticipate that I'll enjoy the rest.

The shoes! I was so impressed by the way Viola Ardone made shoes a recurring subject. From the very first pages, it's established that Amerigo longs for a new pair of shoes, but when he finally gets them, they're too tight, and Chapter 12 ends with him leaving them behind. The last sentence of Chapter 12 was a gut punch.
