I really wanted to like this story but I felt like the writing was all over the place. I'm guessing maybe this is because this is a translated work. The novel jumps from antecdote to antecdote and the flow is jumpy and confused. I guess that is effective if you interpret as actually reading the thoughts of a child, but it just didn't work for me.
