This book is like a 3.5 stars for me. It’s right on the bubble between a 3 and a 4 stars read. Let us unpack why that is.

First off, this book is super readable. I was able to read it in one day and did not want to put it down. The characters are engaging. The plot is a bit formulaic, but the writing makes it still feel fresh. It is categorized as a young adult novel, but it is right on the cusp with eighteen-year-old characters and a plot that was based on losing one’s virginity.

Here was the rub for me. It was positioned as a “sex positive” book, but the whole concept of needing to lose one’s virginity as practice for the next guy inherently subverts the construct of being sex positive. That was a frustration. So few books get this right, however, that I think I’ve become desensitized and still enjoyed this.
