I read this book as a stand alone without reading the rest of the series. I actually didn't even realize it was a serious until I started reading it. It made the characters a little less enduring (I didn't get to enjoy their character arcs and growth like I would have if I had read the rest of the series) but it also made me more intrigued about their history and made me want to give the rest of the series a shot. I did not enjoy having to Google to get the back story.
The book is well paced and well thought out. I am not a huge romance reader but this one was good. It was never too mushy or over the top. The humor was sprinkled in at just the right times. Most romances only focus on the two main characters. This one did a great job of giving secondary characters their time in the spot light.
