The Art of Escaping turned out to be much better than I was expecting, with a main character who is charming and endearing to the end. The book has a good flow and readers are really able to access Mattie's character with this coming of age story. I am not very sure what the secrets were all about, as Mattie was well adjusted with a good family. Except for the safety issue, there really seemed no reason for Mattie to hide her activities from those she loved. To some extent, the author conveyed her reasons for going on her own, but it seemed more like a plot point than a believable part of the story.

This YA novel is good for teen readers, as it shows how possibilities can be endless and following your dreams can be a reality through hard work and perseverance. The Art of Escaping is a good, solid read and one that I would recommend to YA readers.
