Mattie is a quirky girl who relates to people in ways you would not quite expect. Her best friend is a former home-schooled overachiever who is abandoning Mattie in the summer to go to a prestigious boarding school. She calls one of her teachers by his first name and has no issues speaking plainly in front of him. And she has no problem going up to a stranger’s house to learn how to be an escape artist.

The stranger, however, is not thrilled with this interaction. Miyu is the daughter of the renowned (and deceased) Akiko Miyake, escapologist and performance artist. Miyu’s history with her mother was not healthy and she does not like living in the past, and yet she welcomes Mattie into her home to discuss escapology. I wonder what she sees in Mattie that allows her to open a door into her past.

As this story unfolds, I am excited to go on the adventure with Mattie. She seems to be simultaneously fearless and yet shy about the world knowing who she really is.

Book Cover

I think the cover will lack the ability to grab the reader as they walk by it in a bookstore. However, I love the green waves with the hand coming out of it.
