One thing I know for sure is that this book is all action and badass female characters. Even the book cover actually shows this. I have not read a book by E.K. Johnson but I am planning to read them.
This book has female knights and a plot story filled with action. Even the main heroine is not one to be messed with. If you're looking for a book with badass and non feminine female heroines then this book is for you. I can't say that it's something like Throne of Glass or Aelin, but this one is more on fighting and battles not magic and romance. It's a story of independence and strength among warriors. Somethig like The Valiant and Wonder Woman alike. There is of course character development and show of strength.
