First things first: I absolutely adore the cover for this one. It’s epic, but more than that I love the colors used. It seems like there’s a decent amount of purple that sneaked onto the cover, which makes it stand out more in my memory than many of the other fantasy novels I’ve been reading lately. So major points for that.
I knew I was going to have to read this book the second I saw that E.K. Johnston was behind it – I’m a huge fan and can’t resist anything new, especially not from my favorite genre.
I’ll admit that the first chapter didn’t really draw me in right away – it was a lot of lore to cover in very little time. Thankfully the excerpt included more than one chapter, so I had plenty of time to meet a couple of the characters and become attached to them. Now I just absolutely have to see what happens next!
