Too clever by half
This book is hard to categorize as anything other than suspense but it’s got a sci-fi twist thrown in for sure.
Evelyn Hardcastle is going to die, 7.5 times as the title states. Our narrator keeps waking up in a Groundhog Day-like scenario where it is always the day Evelyn dies—but the narrator wakes up as a different person. Thus we get the story from each character and we also get the weird commentary on how a person’s base extincts and lizard brain can override even the intellect of our narrator. While that helps when the narrator is a detective, it doesn’t help when the narrator is a fight-starter who gets in his own way.
This is a crazy book with a fairly major plot twist at the end. There are a ton of different characters to keep straight. In the months since I read it, my fondness for the book has faded a bit. But it’s still a great read.
