I enjoy detective stories and mysteries, whether they’re books or shows or movies, and I usually play a game with myself to see how quickly I can put the clues together to solve the “who did it, how did they do it, and why” of the story. Usually I can pick up the clues quickly enough to unravel most of those by the halfway point, so I was a bit worried that this prompt was going to be a difficult one to fulfill. I asked some other avid readers for a few titles that would surprise me, and Evelyn Hardcastle was among them.

This book had me writing down my ideas and guesses from chapter 1, and unraveling everyone’s secrets was hugely enjoying! I figured out a good deal of by the halfway point, but there were enough loose ends I hadn’t put together until a mere few pages before the reveals that I think it’s safe to say I was surprised!

If I had to describe The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle in a mere sentence, I would call it a murder mystery that combines the elements of Clue and Doctor Who. An ensemble cast is stuck on the property until the mystery is solved, but there’s a distinct timey-wimey (for you Whovians reading this) aspect to how the events and timelines play out. I found myself not wanting to put the book down, and I was mostly happy with the plot and its conclusion.
