I really want to give this one two stars, but I feel like it gets three stars just because it held my attention until the end. Mostly I was left with a feeling of "what did I just read?" and "why am I reading this?" Once you figure out what's going on, it's still engaging enough to hold your interest, but ultimately, if not for this gimmick, there's nothing special about it. That said, the beginning is pretty boring, but if you can make it through the slog that is the first thirty pages or so, you've probably got enough invested to justify finishing it instead of DNF-ing it. I came so very close to DNF-ing this one it's not even funny. The author gets kudos for trying a new tactic, but needs to work on their plotting.
