It is not my tale to tell of what is going on in the Hardcastle party at that time, however, I could begin with a question:

What would you do, if you have one day to solve a crime, in which you know nothing of the victim, the place, the time, and if you don’t solve it in that day, you’ll have to wake again the same day in another body?

Oh, and did I mention you have to solve it in 7 days otherwise you’ll have to do that again from the beginning with no memories from this loop?

Confusing, is it not? Right! That is exactly what I feel when I was reading it. It’s like you’re in endless circle and you do not know where to start. Like the time paradox where you think you can go back in time and change something, but if you do, not only you’re stopping the loop, but risking what you’ve achieved so far. How terrifying and exciting could it be?

Oh but fear not, you have been given a guide, who would tell you whom you are and what your quest would be! And, did I mention there would be someone else who may or may not be helping you? Hmm, how fun it would be, would it not?

“Everybody in this house is wearing a mask.”

That’s about sum it all. Nobody was who they claimed to be. There’s secret in everything, in this house and it’s up to our main character to decide, whether Evelyn Hardcastle would die or would the justice be served.

Reading this keeps making my forehead creased, I had to do that because I’m thinking hard, connecting the dots of what was happening. Every detail is necessary, what happened in this time, is important and relevant to the other. And I’m so happy that our main character is observant too, in some of his ways.

If you have a world building in a Fantasy Novel, in this mystery novel, you have to have the details of the time, the places, the atmosphere, and of course, the character building. Considering this is a standalone book, the characters in the book are memorable that I can still remember what happened to them. Plus, I can feel empathy to some of them, wondering the what-if. Kudos for the Mr. Turton for that.

Now, what I love reading a mystery novel is guessing the culprit, the reasons, the how. And I know a good one won’t let me guess it until the very end, which is what this book is so good. The intrigues and the climax in each part is mindblowing. When I thought, oh that’s it then, but then voila, you’re being fooled.

How cruel is the author to us, no?

Every good book has a satisfying ending. For this one, I love how the author concludes everything. Instead of making something incredibly out of the box, he was doing, what my old teacher said, something edge of the box. Meaning, it’s something not you can think of, but not something that crush all your expectations.

However, I just wished that he would explore more, the after or the epilogue for our main characters. Where his decisions would lead him too. Maybe one would argue that it’s an open ending, but for me, you can give me an open ending, but you have to conclude one in a satisfying manner. If not for that, this book would be perfect for me! Especially for my Merry Unbirthday celebration.

Thus I rate this book a 4 STARS!!
