Like other reviewers, I was a novice to the Jane Tennison story so I came to this book without the background of her career in law enforcement. That said, I thought the book was a great prelude for me. The story begins with Tennison's inauspicious days as a new officer in a very male-dominant precinct. She has a supervisor who sees something in her that he likes and she has some support from a few other fellow civil servants, but ultimately she makes it on her own proving that she can succeed no matter what the odds are against her.
As she experiences life as a police officer, it becomes readily apparent that she is up for whatever task is assigned and whatever crime confronts her. In the battle between good and evil, Tennison is a formidable opponent on the side for good.
