As I began the excerpt, I thought I would find that this was a book about the search for a long-ago surrendered first birth child. As the memoir continues, the story evolves more deeply into the feelings encountered by the birth mother in facing her own adoption, and the fact that she also gave up a baby for adoption. Rather than a search story, it is more of a psychological remembrance of things lost and things found.
