It was hard to put this book down!

All the characters were complex and lovable. Amandla was a lovely main character to follow, and I felt so bad given the situation she's in (her mother having a mental illness, living in a one-room home, surviving school, etc.). Her voice throughout, however, was great, and believable for a fifteen-year-old.

I also loved all the complicated, messy family drama. Just from the fact that Amandla's mom is white and she is brown (with a mysterious black father) was intriguing to me. I thought the idea that she "wasn't white enough" or "wasn't black enough" at school was done well, and it broke my heart. Also, her grandparents--they brought a lot of drama too!

I liked the bits of romance that we got in the book (including the side queer romance)!

Thank you BookishFirst and Penguin Teen for giving me the chance to read this wonderful book!
