I really, really enjoyed this book. I haven't read too many books book that are set in South Africa. The author did an excellent job and bringing you into the story and making you feel that you are right there next to Amandla. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters and I have to say, Annalise, Amandla's mother, is a really good mom even though she has a memory problem at times. But you could really tell that she loves her daughter and would do anything to protect her.
I also think it's sad that we live in a time in place where prejudice is still so strong in South Africa. Since Amandla is half white and half black, it's like she wasn't accepted anywhere fully. she was to light for the black people and to dark for the white people. Not feeling or knowing where you belong, is not a really good feeling. But I'm glad that in this book, Amandla was surrounded by people who loved her, with no condition. I would definitely recommend this book to others if you like to ream contemporary YA books.
