Although this book is rated as Young Adult, I really enjoyed the look into the life of 15 year old Amandla and her mother, who live in a very poor area of South Africa. Amandla was born of a wealthy white mother and a Zulu bartender. Her mother, who was kicked out of the family, has mental issues and you can't trust everything that Amandla hears. They live day to day in a tin shanty and the hope that there will be enough food. Amandla follows her mother on an errand one day, after which, the whole world changes for Amandla.

I loved the quick, witty writing and the descriptions that took me into a world I can only imagine. This isn't just a story of black and white in South Africa, but of friends, love and determination. At the end of the book you are left with a feeling of hope and also some sadness. I believe that a sequel to Sugar Town Queens shoud be given a thought. I am sure Amandla will face many other challenges in her life that we could all learn from.
