There is a lot to unpack within the first five chapters of the book, but they develop at a steady pace. The protagonist, Amandla, is an isolated kid just looking to leave the confines of her mom's crazy visions and her town's destructive rumor mill. I think the cover beautifully represented the girls described in the book and beyond Little Bit and Amandla's friendship, I'm interested in seeing how Goodness develops a stronger role in their friendship. The hierarchy established in the last chapter with Amandla's family on her mother's side seems like a small taste of the world-building to come. With elegant metaphors and profound lessons, I'm intrigued to read where Nunn takes the story next.
