Author Marie Lu is adept at writing dialogue and uses it well as she develops her characters and keeps the plot of her story fast paced and interesting. The characters’ words and brief descriptions of what they were doing or thinking as they talked gives the reader a good picture of each. The characters are ones the reader can care about and feel concern for as they face situations that could put them in harm’s way.

Winter is a popular rock star, but not egotistical. He is made likable to the reader from the onset with his concern over his fans standing in the rain waiting to greet him, and the love and caring ways shown to his mother, who finds it difficult to return his affection due to losses in her life.

Sydney has the reader’s sympathy with the type of home life she’s left behind. She had to learn to take care of herself at a young age after her mother died. The spy group she was recruited into became her family.

When Winter is approached to join Sydney in a special spy mission, an action packed plot is there for the reader to enjoy with a little romance included for those who need that. One might have to suspend belief at certain times, but the book is one many will find intriguing. It’s not surprising there is a sequel.
