This book gets right into the action and danger as we follow Talin, a member of her nation's last line of defense for both supernatural, super-human Ghosts, and the encroaching threat of colonization. This book is quick to bring up themes of refugee, starvation, colonization, and xenophobia.
Talin is mute and uses sign language, as do most of the side characters even if they can speak. We don't have much of a grip on her character yet besides her deep connection with her friend.
