Whirlwind of a Ride
This is such an impressive story. With quickly paced world building, you are immediately pulled into the spaces of Mara and Karensa and feel like you’ve actually been there before. Detailed and complex characters help to paint the pictures of a war torn land and the people turned against one another, even when they’re all each other has left. While unable to verbally speak, Talin is a force to be reckoned with. She’s swift and intelligent and graceful, and doesn’t let her destroyed vocal chords hold her back from standing up and speaking her truth. She’s a stunning main character and I absolutely love her.
Marie Lu has created such an immersive and addictive world in Skyhunter. The representation is beautiful and the ways a nonverbal character is written is lovely. The world of the Strikers is built for silence, making it specially designed for a nonspeaking character. But she is never cut off from communicating with others. Through signing, Lu has opened communication to while also making it feel elite. I deeply love this book and highly recommend it to anybody wanting to dip their toes in the fantasy genre. Written by a woman and geared towards young women, this book sets itself up to bring a slew of new readers to the genre. I can’t bloody wait to read the second book.
