Good Dystopian Fantasy, Reminiscent of Other Favorite Books
This book seems like it will be perfect for fans of The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and Supernova Era by Cixin Liu I think the author has built a solid fantasy world, and there's the obligatory map at the front, as well as hints that this could be what is left of the planet Earth since there is mention of wild cows, evolved from former domestic animals in a previous life. There is what could be a slight nod to the current COVID19 pandemic with the reference to stories of former inhabitants were killed by a sickness.
The author worked as an artist in the video game industry after she graduated from college, and she has truly mastered the details that dystopian fans expect. Protagonist Talin is the strong female warrior who narrates the tale of this dytopian world where ghosts have been turned into killing-machine monsters. To make them even scarier, they not only live forever (unless Talin and friends can kill them), but the Ghosts (proper noun once they are monsters) also continue to grow their entire lives. As might be expected, Talin can focus her mind and be ready to put her life on the line in battle. There is a hint of an attraction to Corian, a male whose sparkling description made me think of Edward in Twilight, However, Corian seems to be just as tough, if not tougher, than the pseudo-granite countertops buy the same name; his earrings are pieces of bone he has cut out of the former ghost monsters killed in battle.
However, just when a reader expects some possible romance between Talin and Corian, a Ghost bites Corian. To prevent Corian from becoming a monster, Talin must immediately slice his throat. And the page-turning race is on to see what happens to Talin!!
