I loved this book from the first few chapters! The world is so unique and I loved learning about how different it was and how it was structured. Talin is an incredibly interesting character and her bonds with some of the others were deep and I loved seeing them interact with her. Talin herself is an immigrant from a nearby nation that was overrun by the Federation. This book talks about a lot of the mistreatment she receives as an immigrant and it’s very inspiring to see her overcome all of it and even win people over with her skills and demeanor.

The build-up between Talin and Red (the prisoner) is EVERYTHING to me! I love them so much and they have so much chemistry and understanding with one another. I enjoyed watching them bond and slowly understand each other’s personality and their reasons for certain decisions. One of my favorite tropes is relationships and friendships between two supposed enemies. I feel like it gives such great morals to readers about understanding and looking at things from a different side of things. Plus, it’s just so much more satisfying to see them bond when they have so many obstacles and reasons to hate each other. Marie Lu also did a great job with connecting them with one another in a multitude of ways, which led to amazing interactions between the two of them that really made me love them both!

I thoroughly loved the side characters in this story as well. I feel like it's important for books to have lovable side characters so the story is enriched in more than one way. Jeran was my personal favorite among the side characters. He was definitely someone I would love to meet if he existed because he seems so kind and enjoyable to be around. Adena was amazing too because she was so supportive of Talin even when they disagreed. She would give her opinion but ultimately know that Talin made her decision and isn't going back on it. Just amazing!

The way they left the story made me hungering for more. I want to know what happens between Red and Talin and I really hope that relationship develops into something great. I also pray to God that none of my favorite side characters die... I will be emotionally traumatized if they do. I'm definitely going and ordering the second book!
