What I truly enjoyed was having a non-speaking main character and the character relationships. When a character died, they weren't forgotten. There was a presence that carried throughout the story. Often when an inciting incident is a character death, they're quickly forgotten in favor of the new.

I think this book ended on a big bummer. Lu tries to sprinkle in some hope, but I just felt down after everything the characters went through.

The world building was good. The mystery of the Old Ones was intriguing. Lu also does well with culture and classes of people, both in terms of difficulty and positives. Our main character is already shunned for being an outsider, but she finds a reason to fight for her adopted city.

Overall, I think I'd read the next book simply because I want a better ending for the characters. I'm just not sure how soon that'll be.
