I enjoy how Marie Lu crafts the details of this universe. The evolution of her writing style is prevalent in this story as elements from past characters and prior book series have shaped some of the intricacies of Skyhunter. Communication is something that is incredibly hard for authors to master, yet Marie not only excels at capturing the complex emotions of characters, but she does so in a situation where the main character is mute. I now understand why this story was so difficult for her to write, yet her hard work has CERTAINLY paid off.

The plot depicts the final independent nation in continent that is quickly being enveloped by The Federation’s manifest destiny. The pains of war and the duality of a soldier are explored in fine detail. I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions between Red and the other characters. Marie expertly captured the complexities of trying to communicate in a language different than your native tongue and was careful to emphasize translational differences that often arise when switching between languages. In addition, I enjoyed the dynamic between Talin and Red. Talin was an excellent main character that captured the essence of a huntress fighting to protect those she holds dear. I am excited to read the next book and the plot twist and cliffhanger at the end of Skyhunter was as thrilling as it was unexpected. I can’t wait to see Talin and Red’s dynamic expounded upon in the next book as they cope with the tragedies of war. This was an excellent series and I hope that one day a Hollywood director can take on the unique challenge and be bold enough to do this story justice on the big screen! I imagine this story will be as hard to properly direct as it must have been to write.
