It is a world of tension and war. You sense this from the way our POV describes her world, using references like the sky appearing a bruised pink color. There's nothing soft or calming about mornings for Talin.

In the Strikers, Talin finds a place to belong. Where all those around her are as silent as her (caused by an injury from an attack when she was young). Having a main character of a sci fi series using only sign language is a compelling plot device.

While its a harsh life, there's also camaraderie with Talin's Shield, her partner in the Strikers. As they set out, you get a sense of the setting and its mysterious past. Then its shattered by the horror of the Ghosts and Talin's face-off with them. And then heartbreak.

This sneak peek is a vast array of emotions and an immensely intriguing opening into a dystopian world.
