First of all the setting and the time period YES! Love the sarcastic approach to the book it made me enjoy it more LoL. The 30s was a dangerous but also amazing time period. Hollywood was a deep dark place looking to advantage of whoever was naive enough to enter. And Luli wei a desperate upcoming Chinese actress would do anything to be a star. Racism plays a role into the story and the discrimination with the LGTBQ community. The descriptions in this book can get very dark but thats what i loved about it. Being a women a Chinese one at that and also being queer is no joke especially in this unaccepting time. This book is well developed and highly addictive. I love love the metaphors. “ playing a monster instead of maid” awesome word play!!! Wasn’t a big fan of the magic part it wasn’t really explained clearly so i was still a little confused at some parts. But i still loved the book!!
