I haven’t read from Nghi Vo before, but I have heard so much about The Chosen and the beautiful, her previous work a Great Gatsby retelling. Coming to Siren Queen, the cover is gorgeous and I was only curious to see what is so special about this book. Turns out, Vo’s writing itself is like a siren’s call.

I didn’t read the synopsis before diving in and I enjoyed this more that way. The story is simply creative with rituals, magic, the 30s setting and the out-of-the-box imagination of monsters controlling the castings in Hollywood. A historical fantasy, more of the latter than the former. Siren Queen has the most unique view of Hollywood, the cine industry is quite magical and glamorous from outside. Vo has utilised those aspects and blended it very well into the story! A dark magical fantasy that blends reality and imaginary worlds with lush and gothic-like literature.

Vo is clever with the figure of speech, and with unexpected surprises and allegories. You’ll know when you read this 😉 I LOVED IT. If you love the idea of old Hollywood you’ll enjoy this too!
