“No maids, no funny talking, no fainting flowers.”

Glitzy and glamorous while simultaneously gritty and dark, Siren Queen puts a magical realism and speculative spin on Hollywood journeys to fame and fortune. Luli Wei encounters monsters both figurative and literal as she climbs the ladder of fame.

Some things I loved:

⭐️ There were delightfully flawed side characters throughout the protagonist’s story who help to highlight some of the pitfalls of fame and importance of relationship.

⭐️ The book touches on several social issues that include rampant misogyny, workers’ rights, immigration, who defines “acceptable” relationships, and blatant abuses of power.

⭐️ The writing is beautiful, and Nghi Vo is one of my auto-buy authors for this exact reason!

There were some sections that got pretty dark, and others that dragged a bit, but otherwise I loved this book!
