Luli Wei wants to be a movie star. She knows the odds are stacked against her as a Chinese-American girl, but she will do what is necessary to make it and to have the roles she wants to get.
The way this story is set up, I initially thought this would focus on the actress’ whole life, but it’s only the very beginning of her start in Hollywood. The focus is on her first three major roles and how she gets there and all the parts in-between with costars and lovers.
I loved Luli’s ambition and how she calculated how she did things in her life, but as much as I enjoyed her as a main character, I adored the supporting cast. Jacko and Emmaline and Tara and Harry were all so well written, I loved what they added to Luli’s story. I enjoyed how Emmaline foiled Luli’s story and life.
I loved the magical/fabulist element. There’s just enough to put more shimmer on the splendor of Old Hollywood and to further blacken its worst parts. There were some truly horrific fantastical moments and I ate those right up.
I rated this 3.75 stars!
