As someone who is fascinated by the story of Golden Age starlet Anna May Wong, I was beyond excited when I read the premise for this novel. And I am pleased to report that it is far beyond what I could have hoped. Not only is this book helping to shine a light on a far underreported aspect of Hollywood history, but it's doing so with a perfect touch of magical realism that explains how the predatory film industry so quickly became the juggernaut it did almost too well. The prose is beautiful and flowing in a way I do not have the poetic powers to accurately describe, unlike the author. She so easily transports the reader to the film land of yesteryear, and you can't help but feel as though you're there, even as you learn of a world of curses and potions and immortality. Never has a fictional description of Hollywood in its earliest years felt more appropriate and more evocative of what those magical yet dangerous years were truly like.
