The first thing that drew me to this book was the cover. Intriguing and mysterious, I wanted to learn more. This book introduces two Chinese sisters that yearn to go to the movies to see the beautiful stars up on the big screen. And when one stumbles upon set of a movie, she begins her Hollywood career. But, it is quick to see from the first chapters that she will be perceived as different in this community. She is chosen as a beggar for what she looks like and it seems her mother is happy to accept the payment that comes along with it. I am eager to learn what happens to Luli and her sister as one embarks on a Hollywood journey that may not be what she had once hoped as a little girl. Coming of age novels are one of my favorites so I’m already drawn into this one.
