Vo's got crazy mastery over tone and atmosphere with simple phrases and words. The first scene does such a great job getting the reader into the character's head, and really lets you into her shoes. This immersion keeps going throughout the entire preview, and I'm so starved for the rest of this book. Wonder if the protagonist was inspired by a specific individual, like Anna May Wong, or an amalgamation of historical figures.
