This story is written absolutely gorgeously- while we haven't really seen yet what the "monsters" are and the more fantastical elements, readers are already getting a great sense of the time and place this is set in. It's so savvy to call on the things that are deeply familiar first, and I can't wait to see what kinds of wrenches are thrown in our understanding.
