Extremely interesting - magical realism or metaphor?

I absolutely loved the blurb we were given - the author utilizes some turns of phrases that made me question whether or not we were looking at an Early Hollywood alternate universe with magic realism, or if it wasn't all a metaphor. Maybe the magic realism IS the metaphor? At any rate, this is far more intriguing than a straightforward historical fiction.
