The short amount there to read left me feeling confused. I have a brief portrait of a young Chinese girl who seemed fascinated by the early movies. I didn’t quite understand the part about cutting off an inch of her hair. Then, she is asked to play the part of a young beggar girl, which adds to more of her fascination with movie stars and hanging around the movie set. The excerpt ended abruptly. I think the reader needed at least ten more pages to get a clearer picture of the book.
