I was instantly surprised by the style of writing here, and being thrust straight into a well crafted and conjured scenery of 1920s America.

The cover is beautiful, the greyscale image drew me in and piqued my interest in this book, and yet I was surprised by the story within in comparison to the cover! Where the cover is greyscale, the writing within these first few chapters hit me with powerful imagery of colours woven between powerful imagery of culture, magic and back street Hollywood. Golden memories, silver and black screens, long black hair.

The magic of Hollywood on the screen and off is delightfully captured in a mystical, under-the-narrative style which had me intrigued to see how the magical element will play out in the rest of the book. The hints at sorcery and ritual magic hinted at in the symbolism of cutting the hair compared with the simple magic of the big screen through a child's eyes really captured my imagination.

This laced through with the elements of mixed cultural experiences amongst the 1920s immigration population really set a stage of sounds, smells and sights I was drawn into.

I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I was drawn into this story and I would have loved to have read on.
