I was surprised by how much I liked Seoulmates. I often struggle reading contemporary books, but this one was different. Hannah and Jacob were both good characters and I enjoyed seeing both of their points of view. I like that the author didn’t drag out the miscommunication and break up too long. The lack of lengthy miscommunication was a refreshing surprise, especially for a contemporary young adult book.
I loved the family in the book, the two sections with the moms point of view were sweet and fun and I liked Jacob’s younger sister as well. I wish Hannah’s struggle with her Korean identity was a but more fleshed out and had a stronger resolution, but it was interesting to see her figure out a balance between her Korean and American identities.
I didn’t love that Jacob gave up acting- I feel like I read so many performing arts books where one character gives up their performing art to be with the other and I don’t like that. Overall this was a very sweet book that made me happy to read.
