An intriguing, surprising and satisfying first chapter. Stylistically I thought that this was going to be rather disappointing. Noir type narratives are, in my opinion, extremely hard to pull off. As a result of historical disappointments, I was immediately on the fence by the end of the first paragraph. Yet much to my surprise I quickly fell to the positive side of said fence. Character development, plot depth, environment and suspense were all spot on and uniquely balanced in roughly six pages. I’m left curious if the entirety of the book is written in this style. If not, all the power to the author. But if so, then there has been an extraordinary precedence set by the first chapter he will have to build on. Still, I think that this particular author has the talent to pull it off and would definitely trade my time to finish this book to find out.
