The beautiful cover of this book pulled me in like I’m entering the story through a vibrant Brazilian street. The opening sentence hooked me right away - “Trust neither thin-bottomed frying pans nor Molinas, Grandma Juliet Ramires always said” - setting the stage for a Romeo and Juliette-esque teenage romance full of strong family bonds, vivid descriptions and delicious Brazilian foods that I can almost smell wafting off the page. The tension quickly builds as competing bakeries with generations of distrust continue to clash. “Ramires only prepare savory foods. Molinas only prepare sweets.” But everyone knows sweet and savory go together, right?
