Salt and Sugar didn't necessarily entrance me from the beginning, but teenagers with baking ambitions would enjoy this own voices installation of family rivalries. Carvalho anchors the start of the story with the death of Alice's grandmother, the most recent matriarch of Salt. This helps give the story a solid starting point instead of an arbitrary one. She also introduces the rivalry with Sugar, another bakery across the street.
