While the idea of two neighborhood bakeries competing for customers may not seem like a situation that could be a Romeo and Juliet-type retelling, the Molina bakery is run by a family that is willing to spread vicious lies in order to be profitable. The Molina family accuses their main competition of having a rat infestation; they hire people to pretend to be customers of the Ramires bakery and make negative comments in front of potential customers. Worst of all, they stay open for business during the funeral of the Ramires matriarch, the grandmother of the teenage female who provides this book's first-person narration. It seems like a safe prediction that this narrator will have a hate-turning to-love relationship with Pedro from the Molina bakery family.
