SALT AND SUGAR’s cover caught my eye and reading that it’s a rom-com modern interpretation of Romeo and Juliet definitely made me interested. The sample First Impression starts off very sad with Lari mourning the death of her grandmother. We learn the toll this loss had taken on her family. At the end of the sample, Lari has just run into a wedding cake — the competing bakery’s cake to be exact. As if things couldn’t get worse, this happens! There’s definitely a lot of conflict between the bakeries. I’m interested to see how things play out. Will Lari ever learn to cook or bake? The reference to the shoemaker’s children made me laugh. I like what I’ve seen so far of the writing.
